The passing of our 13 year old dog Lucy 1996- March 31, 2009

If It Should Be

If it should be I grow frail and weak
And pain prevents my peaceful sleep,
Then you must do what must be done
When this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Selfishness might stay your hand.
But on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.

We've had so many happy years
That what's to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer. So,
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend.
Only -- stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me.
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time, you too, will see
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Do not grieve it should be you
Who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years......
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Pat,
I am so sorry to hear about your pet. It is so hard to loose a pet, because they are in fact part of your family. Sincerely, Robert

Oh Pat, I'm so sorry to hear this sad news.
I know how much the passing of such a beloved pet can hurt.
I hope the hurt will flow over in the comfort of sweet memories.
You are in my thoughts.

Hug,
Essie

Our Saint Bernard, Gretchen was 12 when we had to make the same choice. She has been gone for 4 years and we still miss her. I am so sorry for your loss. I cried when I read the poem. I feel for you. Feel lucky you knew your Lucy. We feel so lucky our Gretchen graced our lives.

Dear Pat

My heart goes out to you and I am so sorry you lost your Lucy. Please find comfort in knowing she is with alot of other doggies and will be waiting for you at the gate when you go home too.
Beautiful poem, says it just right.
I too have dogs and know the sadness you are feeling...

Pat,

Today I received an email from a friend about a dog named Lucky. This dog had a fondness for taking treasures out of open suitcases and placing them in her spot in the basement. The story is heartfelt and lovely. Was this your Lucky?

Let me extend my most sincerest of sympathy. I know how heart-breaking it can be to lose a pet. We lost our wonderful Brava a few years ago and it just about did me in. I married into this dog and was very lucky to know her for 7 years. She was my sweetheart. Again, I'm so sorry to hear about your lose, but I have faith, you'll see her again.

Abrazos,
Georgina

Dearest Dearest Patty...

My heart literally weeps for you and your family...I know your pain all too well. There is absolutely nothing I can say to take your pain from you ...I can only hope to provide a small amount of comfort by saying... you and Lucy were so lucky to have found one other in this big world of ours...each of you provided and received the best that love has to offer...and through those gifts... memories enough to last the rest of your days. She will be with you, by your side forever...

Much Love
Jodi

Sending a hug your way today Pat. So sorry for the loss of your sweet dog. We lost our dog of 13 years about 6 months ago and I sometimes still think I see him at the back door waiting to come in. The pain does pass and the love and memories live on. Take care, Tammy
